Windows 8 is Microsoft’s latest and most radical OS yet and Microsoft is hoping that Windows 8 will take off in a big way. To help do so, Microsoft is offering users of Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista and Windows 7 the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 8 for just US$39.99.
Thanks to this attractive offer, many users have taken the chance to upgrade to Windows 8 and many aresharing their upgrading experience on our forums.
Particularly, many users are interested to know if it was possible to do a clean install on a fresh or freshly-formatted hard drive with the Windows 8 upgrade offer, since the upgrade process’s idea of a clean install is not what one might think. Specifically, a clean install while running the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant basically just junks all your files in the Program Files, Program Files (x86) and Users folders and backs up your Windows 7 installation to Windows.old. This is not the same as installing on a brand new hard drive.
That said, while many users have reported that they have successfully managed to a clean install on a fresh or freshly formatted hard drive with no prior Windows installations on it, some others have reported that they got an error message instead. Fortunately, a user on our forum, junialum, has suggested some fixes for it. He has also documented and shared, quite clearly too might we add, his own Windows 8 upgrading experience.
