Scott Forstall Reportedly Terminated over Refusal to Sign iOS Maps Apology

Source: Mashable

Apple today announced a major executive shake-up. Scott Forstall, Senior VP of iOS software and John Browett, Senior VP of Retail are both leaving Apple at the end of the year.
Forstall's departure, who has for so long been the public face of iOS, may come as a shock to some. After all, this was the man who shaped much of the development of iOS. However, multiple sources are reporting that Forstall wasn't well-liked amongst the top brass at Apple. The very public failure of Apple's new Maps app certainly didn't help too, as Forstall was the man directly responsible for the development of the Maps app.
Described as a brash, abrasive and ambitious man, Forstall was allegedly consolidating power among the ranks at Apple shortly after Jobs' death. Forstall's attitude was such that Jony Ive, Apple's Senior VP of Industrial Design, refused to take meetings in the same room as him.
It is also reported that Forstall has a tendency for deflecting blame and was so adamant that the complaints over the new Maps app were overblown that he refused to sign Apple's letter apologizing for their Maps app, leaving CEO Tim Cook to do that instead.
In fact, Forstall was so disliked by his co-workers that they (including Jony Ive) volunteered to split Forstall's workload to accelerate his departure.

Google Magazines on the Nexus 10 Comparable to Print

Source: Romain Guy via Google+

While Google's 29th event was unfortunately delayed due to Hurricane Sandy, it still managed to unveil its key products, the LG Nexus 4, Samsung Nexus 10, Nexus 7 (32GB) and Android 4.2, via its official blog. While we haven't managed to see much of the Nexus 10 yet, Googler Romain Guy has given us some eye candy in the form of a few self-shot portraits of the flagship 10-inch tablet placed beside a few print magazines.
The result? The Nexus 10's 2560 x 1600 display with its high 330ppi (higher than 3rd-gen and 4th-gen's iPads' 264ppi) actually managed to look almost as good as its real-life counterparts!

Apple Delays iTunes 11 Release to November

Following the news of the departures of Apple top executives, Scott Forstall and John Browett, Apple has just announced that it will be pushing back the release of their eagerly-anticipated major iTunes refresh back a month to November.
According to a statement from Apple, the Cupertino firm is taking a little longer than expected because they want to get things right the first time. Whether this has to do anything with the recent uproar over the new Maps app found in iOS 6 is hard to say, but it is clear that Apple wants to avoid history from repeating itself. Furthermore, iTunes is an integral application in Apple's ecosystem.
iTunes is in need of a major needed overhaul as it has become clumsy and bloated over the years. The new iTunes is widely expected to include better integration with iCloud, a sleeker and easier to use interface and enhanced performance.

Windows Phone 8 - Top 8 New Features

Eight's the Lucky Number

The Windows Phone Summit in June shed some light on what to expect from the upcoming Windows Phone 8 platform, especially on the hardware side of things including introduction of multi-core support, NFC technology, microSD card support and new screen resolutions. Aside from the newly-introduced Smart Screen and inclusion of the new IE10, the new software was virtually a mystery to tech pundits and publications alike. Nonetheless, major manufacturers, notably HTCNokia andSamsung, have taken the interim to introduce major WP8 devices without taking the veil off the elusive operating system.
With the recently concluded affair of the Windows 8 launch event (check out our Windows 8 Tech Guide here), Microsoft has decided that it is a good enough time for its accompanying mobile OS to take center stage. Well, we can't agree more. In no order of preference, here are what we think are the top eight new features on the new Windows Phone 8 platform:

Home Lockscreen

The lockscreen gets a slight revamp with users having the options to put app notifications on the forefront of things; after all, it is designed to give you, the user, important information at a glance. Let's start off with the phone's background photo - while you can still select the photos from your album to appear on the lock screen, you have the choice of displaying images or information from selected apps and services. One such example would be the Bing photo of the day app and others include, say, a wallpaper slideshow from Angry Birds. And notifications, yes - there are options for you to choose display detailed status updates from one app, like your upcoming appointments for the day or your latest email messages.

Quick status notification are available as well and you can now choose and customize the selection of five and the order in which they will be displayed. Options include missed calls and voice mails, new text messages or IMs, game alerts, and new emails for up to three accounts and even displayed data from a third-party app.
To configure all of the above, simply navigate and go to Settings > System > Lock screen.

Smart Screen

First seen in June during Windows Phone Summit, the Live Tiles on the start screen can be resized - small, medium and large. The rationale behind the new Smart Screen is to allow Window Phone users to customize the start screen based on what's important to them - music, communication or productivity. However, not all Live Tiles can be resized to small, medium or large.
Live tiles that can be resized in all three forms are Phone, People, Messaging, Gmail, Hotmail, Music + Videos, Games, Calendar, Me and Photos. As forInternet Explorer, Office, ONENOTE, Kid's Corner, Store, Alarms, Calculator, Camera, Maps and Wallet, you only have two sizes to toggle with - small or medium.

Backup and Restore

Backup and restore finally arrived on Windows Phone 8. Using Microsoft's SkyDrive, you can easily set up or restore your Windows Phone 8 device. Backup includes settings for apps, photos + camera, sound, messaging, theme, wallpaper/background, configured accounts, and Internet Explorer favorites.
Do note that the backup and restore feature does not store any personal information such as password or pin codes, hence you will be prompted for these information when you choose to restore a backup account.
While photos and app list + settings are backed up to SkyDrive, text messages are backed up to the phone's memory. Currently, video backups are disabled in Singapore.

Rooms

Think of Rooms as WhatsApp group chats but with more integration. Or a more full-fledged version of Groups. In these invite-only Rooms, you can chat with members freely in a group conversation, share media such as photos and videos, own a common calendar and share notes, all of which are automatically synced across all Room members' phones. This is a great way for family and other groups of people to stay in touch with each other.
Microsoft has also designed so that the shared calendar feature works with iOS and Windows Phone 7.5 devices too. If you send a Room invitation to someone using an iOS device or Windows Phone 7.5, he or she will get a link to a webpage that provides directions on how to configure that device’s calendar for calendar sharing.

Kid's Corner

Microsoft has made it easy to make your Windows Phone 8 device child-proof. Simply click on the Kid's Corner Tile on your Start screen (it's provided by default), turn the mode on and start selecting the apps and content you want your kids to be able to use. In this way, you are creating a small space where they can access content you think is suitable under your pre-selected guidance. After completing the set-up process, your child will be able to enter Kid's Corner from a separate Lock screen by simply flicking left from your own Lock screen and then flicking up. To leave Kid’s Corner, press the power button. When you press another time, you’ll be back at your own Lock screen.

To keep your information away from prying hands, your notifications will not be visible once your child is in his or her Kid's Corner. Touch screen buttons are locked as well; Windows Phone Store and in-game purchases and web browsing are blocked too, ensuring that your account will not be tampered with and that your kids stay safe from undesirable content. To make things feel more at home and personal, your child can customize his or her Kid's Corner experience in small ways - wallpaper, theme colors, name and resizing/placing the different apps as they see fit.

Office Hub

OneNote Mobile is now separate from Office Hub and functions as an individual app and tile, so as to help Windows Phone users find their documents easier. You can pin the OneNote Mobile as a Live Tile on the Start Screen.
As part of Microsoft's strategy to assist users to find the documents they want, the Office Hub has a "Recent" panel which provides faster access to documents stored on SkyDrive, SharePoint, and on Office 364. The "Recent" panel also helps differentiate the files according to how you receive them - as email attachments and the locations where they are downloaded from.
Replacing the "Locations" panel in Office Hub of Windows Phone 7.5 is the new "Places" panel, where you can browse the documents by the locations they are stored. They are also sorted by the latest documents you have accessed.
Another cool feature of Windows Phone 8 is its seamless integration with Office 2013. Documents will sync across your various Windows 8 devices such as a Windows Phone 8 device, a Windows RT tablet or a desktop running on Windows 8. For example, you make some changes to a Word document, save it and close the file on your desktop. Upon accessing the same file on your Windows Phone 8 device, the file will open to the same page or point as where you left off. This applies for Excel and PowerPoint documents too.

Wallet

Jumping onto the NFC bandwagon, Microsoft introduces Wallet in Windows Phone 8. As a digital wallet, you can store your debit, credit, loyalty and membership card information on your phone. In addition, Wallet can help you find apps that can link to the cards in it to provide more information such as card balance and transaction history. Wallet also features a "Deals" panel where you can add a new deal or find local deals. If a deal interests you, all you need to do is to tap it to find out more. You can then decide whether to save it to the Wallet and pin it to the start screen.
As amazing as it sounds, Wallet is currently not available in Singapore. Of course, local availability is still in the works; a Microsoft spokesperson has previously informed us that they are currently working with several companies to implement this in the near future.

Lenses

With Lenses integrated in the camera settings on your Windows Phone 8 device, users can easily access apps that are fundamental to your photo-taking process. Think of Lenses as a selection of photo apps that make it easy for users to improve your photos or provide extra information via photos taken. These include traditional photography tools like stitching several shots together into a panorama, applying color or tone filters or capturing several shots in rapid succession. Other less traditional apps include, for example, the Bing Vision Lens which will help you explore your surroundings by using your phone’s camera to scan a barcode and lookup product information or translate text from one language to another.
Finding and downloading new lenses to your collection is very simple as well. Simply tap "Find More Lenses" after entering Lenses to explore Microsoft and third-party lenses in the Windows Phone Store. The selection is small for now but dont' fret as popular apps like Instagram will soon make its appearance here.

Windows 8 Upgrade Edition Also Works for a Clean Install

Windows 8 is Microsoft’s latest and most radical OS yet and Microsoft is hoping that Windows 8 will take off in a big way. To help do so, Microsoft is offering users of Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista and Windows 7 the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 8 for just US$39.99.
Thanks to this attractive offer, many users have taken the chance to upgrade to Windows 8 and many aresharing their upgrading experience on our forums.
Particularly, many users are interested to know if it was possible to do a clean install on a fresh or freshly-formatted hard drive with the Windows 8 upgrade offer, since the upgrade process’s idea of a clean install is not what one might think. Specifically, a clean install while running the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant basically just junks all your files in the Program Files, Program Files (x86) and Users folders and backs up your Windows 7 installation to Windows.old. This is not the same as installing on a brand new hard drive.
That said, while many users have reported that they have successfully managed to a clean install on a fresh or freshly formatted hard drive with no prior Windows installations on it, some others have reported that they got an error message instead. Fortunately, a user on our forum, junialum, has suggested some fixes for it. He has also documented and shared, quite clearly too might we add, his own Windows 8 upgrading experience.
For those who want to find out more about the upgrading process, we suggest you check out the informative thread by hitting the link below.

IBM Reports Breakthrough in Carbon Nanotube Chip Technology

Source: IBM Research

Today's processors are made largely out of silicon. And while processors have shrunk and become more efficient over the years, there's a limit to silicon technology. The latest Ivy Bridge processors are built using a 22nm manufacturing process, where transistor elements on the chip are a mere 22nm in size. And according to chip giant Intel, they believe they can bring this down to 5nm in the next few years, but beyond that, a new approach to chipmaking is required.
Thankfully, according to scientists at IBM's Watson Research Center, the team working on carbon nanotubes technology for chipmaking have made a significant breakthrough. Carbon nanotubes have been touted as a possible replacement to silicon as the two share similar properties. Most crucially, much like silicon, carbon nanotubes have superb on-again off-again electrical properties, which is required of transistors.
The latest breakthrough by the scientists at IBM allows them to arrange carbon nanotubes 100 times more densely than previous methods. This has enabled the team to be able to pattern an array of carbon nanotubes on a silicon wafer to build chips with more than 10,000 working transistors.
In light of this finding, Dr. Guha, Director of Physical Sciences at IBM Research stated that this process can be further refined and perfected, but that would require a more highly purified form of the carbon nanotube material.

The rumored Samsung-made Galaxy Nexus 10 tablet is no stranger to leaked photos... and videos. Another video has recently surfaced, showing off the new tablet and the new Android 4.2 lockscreen layout briefly. Here's a quick look at the video:
If you don't already know, the upcoming tablet will be sporting some pretty awesome specs - not quite as impressive as Apple's 4th-gen iPad but we expect the tablet to be priced competitively - including the:
  • 10.1-inch display of 2560 x 1600 resolution (amounts to 299 pixels per inch which outdoes Apple's iPad's Retina Display)
  • Dual-core Samsung Exynos 5250 processor clocked at 1.7 GHz
  • ARM Mali-T604 graphics processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of internal storage
  • NFC, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0
  • 5-megapixel rear camera
The Nexus 10, alongside with the LG's Google Nexus phone, was supposed to make an official appearance at Google's 29th October event in New York but it has unfortunately been postponed till further notice due to Hurricane Sandy.

AP-GfK Poll: Scant Demand for Microsoft's Windows 8

Windows 8 arrived in Singapore last Friday, along with the launch of Microsoft's online Windows Store. While the turnout at the local event seems promising, results of a recent survey conducted by The Associated Press and GfK speaks of lesser encouragement for the software giant. Out of 1,200 adults polled over the phone, fifty two percent of them have not heard of Windows 8 leading up to Friday's release of the redesigned operating system.
Here's more. Among those who knew about Windows 8, sixty one percent had little or no interest in purchasing a new computer fitted with the new software. In addition, only a third of those who knew about the new OS regard it as an improvement over existing titles. "I am not real thrilled they are changing things around. Windows 7 does everything I want it to. Where is the return on my investment to learn a new OS?", says Chris Dionne, a 43-year old engineer who remains unconvinced he should abandon or upgrade his HP laptop using the Windows 7 platform, released in 2009.
Instead of making incremental upgrades to its operating system every two to three years, Windows 8 is by far one of the most radical changes Microsoft has attempted since its Windows 95 release. To quote the source article, the Redmond firm is also "hoping the way Windows 8 looks and operates will appeal to the growing number of people embracing the convenience of smartphones and tablets".
General sentiments towards Microsoft's latest tablet computer, the Surface, weren't too encouraging either. Although the Surface was designed to show off Windows 8's "versatility", sixty-nine percent of the respondents expressed little or no interest in snagging the tablet, a device which Microsoft hopes would injure sales of rival devices like Apple's iPad and other popular tablets from the likes of Amazon and Google.
For a more detailed analysis of the phone survey, kindly hop on to the article by The Associated Press and GfK here

Google Hold Android Event Due to Hurricane Sandy

Close up of Hurricane Sandy approaching North America.

Those who are waiting for Google to unveil its new line of Nexus devices may have to wait a little longer as Hurricane Sandy forced the company to cancel its Android event.
According to The Verge, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency after weather forecasters rated Hurricane Sandy as a potent Category 2 storm or "worst case" superstorm. The venue for Google's event was going to be held on a waterfront pier, which is now in an evacuation zone.
Google - "We are canceling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy. We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more."
This is the second time in two years that Google postponed its launch event. Last year, Google and Samsung postponed the launch of the Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of respect for Apple co-founder and ex-CEO Steve Jobs, who passed away on a few days before the event.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is still going ahead with its Windows Phone 8 launch in San Francisco, where it should be safe from Hurricane Sandy.

Through the end of January, consumers currently running PCs with Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, are qualified to download Windows 8 Pro for an estimated retail price of S$49.99 fromwindows.microsoft.com. And eligible Windows 7 PCs purchased between June 2, 2012, and January 31, 2013 can download Windows 8 Pro for an estimated retail price of S$17.99 with the Windows Upgrade Offer, available at www.windowsupgradeoffer.com. If you don’t want to go the download way, a boxed version of the Windows 8 upgrade DVD can also be bought at all leading IT retail stores for S$89.00.
But what about those who aren’t eligible for any of the upgrade promos? Or those who are building their systems from scratch and therefore need a non-upgrade copy of Windows 8? Well, it looks like some stores have also started selling the OEM versions of Windows 8. According to a Facebook posting from popular PC components retailer Fuwell, the 64-bit OEM versions of Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro are now available at S$138 and S$198 respectively. The retailer is also selling the boxed version of the Windows 8 Pro VUP (that’s Microsoft lingo for an upgrade copy, by the way) for S$69.
However, looking at the latest price list from Fuwell (you do know we’ve frequently updated price lists from IT and CE retailers for download, don’t you?), it looks like the above are promo prices that are set to increase when the offer period is over. In the price list, the prices of the 64-bit OEM versions of Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro are pegged at S$163 and S$230 respectively.
